Default Cannot perform maintenance/cleanup actions in windows mail

Running Windows Mail on Vista Home Premium system, it will not perform any of
the three options under maintenance/cleanup - compact, delete, or reset. If
I click on any of them, I get a message box advising it's calculating folder
size, that closes after a couple of seconds and nothing else happens. What
the hell. Is there some arcane little security option in Vista wherein I
need to click on a "Let me delete my friggin' email messages" button?

Try upgrading to Windows Live Mail:

I'm afraid I don't understand your post.

First, there is no button to compact now. Besides, that only compacts the
message database, it does not touch the messages themselves.

Second, I'm not sure you understand the difference between news posts and
email. There are lots of ways to delete email easily without ever going to
Maintenance, including right clicking Deleted Items and selecting the option
to empty the folder
