I believe the following works with the DeskJet 9800: Turn on the printer.
Press and hold the power button. While holding the power button press the
"X" button once. Release the power button. This should print a test page
that shows the page count.

Default HP 9800 pages printed

I am looking at buying an HP 9800 off ebay. The lady selling it
doesn't know how to check how pages it's printed and neither do I.

Can someone please explain this to me so I can then tell her?

TIA

Ryan

tried this (I have one of these monsters) It prints a page with allt he
color bands and a bunch of codes. Not real clear which one is for total
number of pages printed.

Why do you want this printer?
I use it for 11x17 drawings and have a love/hate relationship with it.
In draft mode, it prints word documents, Visio Drawings and CAD drawings
quickly.
Photos are not too bad depending upon the clarity level selected
(Draft/Normal/Best an so forth.)

However, the printer has a maddening driver package. If a print job is
interrupted, be prepared to get 100 or so pages with one line across the
top. To clear this, you must shut down the PC, unplug the printer and reboot
the PC. I have had the printer come back and resume printing jibberish after
this procedure above. The software seems unable to clear the memory and you
end up wasting tons of paper.

I must say, I love the speed and clarity when it work properly, hate the
damn thing when it gets "off track"

Item 21 is PG = nnnn, which indicates the total page count.

Please read the manual - the "X" button on the printer will cancel the
current print job. Rebooting the computer will not help as it will continue
to send a print job unless you cancel it. If you do not want to press the
"X" button on the printer you could also go to the print spooler and cancel
the print job.

Printing gibberish in generally a sign of a communications issue between the
printer and computer. Make sure you are using a good quality cable and do
not exceed the recommendations for cable length.
