I recently bought a new laptop with Vista Home Basic. I've been trying to
download itunes for about a week, and everytime I try it freezes during the process and eventually times out. So far I've updated the command prompt for vbs, disenabled my firewalls and security, turned off pop up blocker, tried download quicktime separately...everything. Whats frustrating is that I don't get a specific error message, the installation just freezes and times out. Please help. Thanks |

Hey Ladien--
Below are 3 tips for installing Itunes on Vista. Whenever you don't get a specific error message, sometimes one awaits you in event viewer which is a type of diary for error messages. Eventvwr.msc in run box>Windows logs (left pane)>application and sometimes system. The problem with event viewer while it can be helpful, is that much of the time when you click on the link for web information you get MSFT's goofey "we have no clue why this happens message" to the tune of nearly 100% of the time. Here's are 3 tricks that sometimes work when people have trouble installing Itunes on Vista. The last couple newest updates of Itunes have pretty much. solved Vista compatibility problems with Itunes. 1) Start the download of the newest version of Itunes>then type services.msc in the run box or just type services in the search box above start>find ipodservice>select it>click the STOP hyperlink on the left of the services list box>this should enable Itunes to complete the install>when the Itunes install completes go back to the ipodservice>highlight it>double click it>switch it back to automatic start. 2) Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility>open it up>highlight anything related to Itunes or Quick Time that shows up there>delete. Win Installer Cleanup Utility Download http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 Make sure you have no previous files from a previous installation or a ****partial previous installation around by going to these 4 folders, and in you do, View>select all>hold down shift +delete buttons. C:[or your Vista Drive Letter]\Program Files\Apple Software Update C:[or your Vista Drive Lettter]\Program Files\Ipod C:\[or your Vista Drive Letter]\Program Files\Quick Time C:\[or your Vista Drive Letter]\Program Files\Itunes If you see this error in Event Viewer "VBScript Not Installed" 3) Start>cmd>rt. click cmd when it pops up>run as administrator>at the cmd prompt if you don't see C:\Windows system 32 type cd C:\Windows\System 32>type in regsvr32 vbscript.dll and press enter>view confirmation it's registered>Install Itunes. The documentation for this tip from Apple is here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304405 Then hopefully the only thing that will freeze is below: Album: Hell Freezes Over Artist: Eagles Release Date: 11/8/1994 Good luck, CH "Ladien" <Ladien@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:4A58EA4B-4A81-4487-8189-76752BFD33AC@microsoft.com... >I recently bought a new laptop with Vista Home Basic. Hey Chad,
Thanks for your response. I tried everything you suggested and it still freezes. I was wondering, when I go to the service window, show it be set to manual or automatic? Also, any other tricks that I should try? Thanks again. In order to install a new or different version of an application type, often the existing application or program has to be completely uninstalled first. The Windows Vista Uninstall program is less than optimum at doing this and frequently leaves remnant files and folders or registry entries of the uninstalled program on your computer. Some software companies provide an uninstall tool on their support website (i.e. Adobe, Norton, McAfee) which can help with this process, but often even these special uninstaller tools leave remnants of the program on your computer that can block or degrade the installation of the new program. You can further clean up your computer manually as outlined in the following tutorial: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/8...gram-vista.html I have since found and used a program called "Smarty Uninstaller" that does an even better job of uninstalling programs, even tough ones like McAfee and Norton. You scan your computer and the program identifies all the programs on your computer, listing those that have their own uninstaller program and those that are only remnants of a program. First you click for it to use the program's uninstaller, and then when it’s finished, Smarty UI identifies any program remnants and will then uninstall the remnants (from files and folders to registry entries). Once the program you're interested in is completely uninstalled, you can do a clean install of the update without problems. For Smarty UI see link below: http://www.winnertweak.com/uninstaller/ "Ladien" wrote: > Hey Chad, > > Thanks for your response. I tried everything you suggested and it still > freezes. Thanks for your reply. I actually just responded to you on another thread,
but like I said, this is a brand new computer where itunes has never been previously downloaded. Regardless, I have run the microsoft cleanup utility and I'm still having the same issues. "Internet Explorer cannot download itunes setup.exe from appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net. The operation has timed out" "uvbogden" wrote: > > In order to install a new or different version of an application type, often > the existing application or program has to be completely uninstalled first. > The Windows Vista Uninstall program is less than optimum at doing this and > frequently leaves remnant files and folders or registry entries of the > uninstalled program on your computer.
