Hi 52--

1) One Care's firewall with One Care's other features. There is no
essential difference in Vista's firewall and Vista's firewall can be
configured in a fairly sophisticated way.
2) Always use a NAT HDW firewall (as in a router).

I have used the Linksys BEFSR41 EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port
Switch
for years. I have seen them on sale occasionally for $20. It is a wired
router, but they
have the wireless if you need to go that route. "It's always better to
something in hardware
instead of software" not my words but wisdom never-the-less. Also a router
uses no computer
resources.

A superior Firewall is not too far off when ESET releases their ESET Smart
Security Suite. It is in beta now but I have been using it for about 5 weeks
with great results. It will come with NOD32 antivirus and an anti spam
module for Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail.

Not that there aren't reasons however why do you need something
other that the Windows Firewall?

Advanced Firewall

Start - Search - WF.msc

BTW, if you really need more than the Windows Firewall get
a hardware solution and use it and the Windows Firewall.

I disable the windows firewall and use ashampoo. I don't like not knowing
what the firewall is or isn't allowing. after setting up ashampoo, it will
ask you about all activity and allow to create rules so you don't get
bombarded with prompts all the time. but if it detects activity that has no
pre-defined rule, it will ask you to allow or block. I've had spyware
infections that when phoning home, the windows firewall didn't even try to
block or notify me about...I don't like that.

How many spyware infections have phoned home bypassing ashampoo? Nothing
running on your computer can be relied upon to stop something else running
on your computer.

You are not going to find anything better than the Vista FW and Vista in
itself due to the advanced features the FW and Vista are using.

Please elaborate in relation to your observed results of this fw.
