Data from old XP HD to new Vista system

My old XP computer died. The HD is fine. I plan on hooking it to my new
Vista machine with a HD Enclosure. I don't have a proble with finding all
the files, songs, photos etc.
How do I move my Outlook Express info (old messages and address book) to the
new computer?
Also, what about my Quicken program. Will it run on the new Vista system?

Outlook Express will not migrate into Windows Mail through any process I
know of. Quicken will NOT work unless you get the latest version.

What version of Quicken? If you are using Quicken 2006 or later, you should
be fine. The Quicken user files go into different places than expected.
Its default backup location is a sub-folder of Documents but you can backup
to additional locations manually. Its Data files are under User
Name\AppData\Roaming\Intuit.

Neither Quicken, nor any other application is permitted to write data to the
installation folder under Program Files.

If you have your Quicken Data backed up to removable media, you can either
restore your Quicken data from there or copy it to a temp folder and restore
from there. Install Quicken, then open it, go to File menu and select
restore, navigate to the location of your backup, select the file and
Quicken will restore and you'll be back in business.

COMBO OF LETTERS AND NUMBERS\microsoft\Outlook Express

From within the new Windoze Mail use import and browse to this folder.

This will get your messages but the only way I know to get an address book
is
to fire up the old OS and export from within Outlook. But if the old PC is
dead
you may be out of luck there.

I use Quickbooks Pro 99 with no problems.

Try installing Quicken to a new folder on your c:\ drive.
I Use C:\Programs
Using this method works for some old apps.

I guess you don't do anything online with financial institutions? If you
do, how did you avoid Intuit "sunsetting" its loyal user base?:-)

Those letters and numbers make up what is called a "Globally Unique
IDentifier". GUIDs are used extensively within Windows.

You're welcome, Alex. One other point since we are using the same version.
If you add attachments and you encrypt them, the bug that prevents
encryption when using Adobe Reader 8 or higher still exists between Quicken
and Adobe under Vista; at least it does for me so I've had to use Adobe
Acrobat 7.07. Adobe says it is an Intuit issue and Intuit says it's Adobe's
issue, regardless, the problem still exists for me. Fortunately, Acrobat
7.07 works in Vista.
