Default code 39 cd rom driver

My cd-rom has stopped working on my laptop. It has an exclamation point over
the driver, and says windows cannot load the device driver. (code 39). I
cannot load the driver again from the recovery disk because the cd rom does
not work! any help would be greatly appreciated

These ALL apply to your problem, try the middle one first. Even though
the KB articles mention XP the Vista fix is same.

The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected after you upgrade a computer to Windows Vista

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after

you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;314060

When you insert a CD or a DVD, Windows Vista may not recognize the disc

Just Start > Run > Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class

Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
In the right pane, right-click Upper Filters, and then click Delete.
Click yes when prompted to delete the registry value.
In the right pane, right-click Lower Filters, and then click Delete.
Click yes when prompted to delete the registry value.
Quit Registry Editor. To do this, click Exit on the File menu.
Restart the computer.

You may find drivers on the manufacturer's website, can you get to the
internet with the laptop and download from there? There may well be
other issues here, did this just suddenly happen, did you just install
anything, what else can you tell us about the machine, the operating
system and any recent events that might be related?
