Use the media to install a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro, or call whomever you got the pre-built computer and tell them you need the OEM installation media. |

Or check your local computer shop, Microsoft is still selling Windows XP... The direct OEM and retail license availability end date is January 29, 2008. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx Cheers- Jeff Setaro jasetaro@SPAM_ME_NOT_mags.net http://people.mags.net/jasetaro/ PGP Key IDs DH/DSS: 0x5D41429D RSA: 0x599D2A99 New RSA: 0xA19EBD34 |

But if the OP wiped out the only install of XP with an upgrade to Vista or blew away the hidden partition on the hard drive with the recovery image or threw away the install/recovery CDs for XP then the OP burned his bridges and, like you said, will have to go buy another copy. |

Not everyone wants to buy new hardware just because an OS vendor wants to push out a new version. |

If his machine was preloaded with XP and he got an upgrade disc in the mail that tells me his machine was Vista-ready but installed with XP until Vista became available. I suspect his machine is perfectly capable of running Vista. |

However, (and I haven't paid much attention to this because I have absolutely no intention of updating to Vista)......a lot of the programs he presently has on XP do not have drivers that will work with Vista. And as with any new operating system, I would give it at least 6 months to get some of the major bugs ironed out and when Vista's SP1 comes out, that would be when I would think about it. Quite happy with XP though. Heather |

There may a secondary partition that contains the original backup software
that can be written to CD. My wife has an HP that I made the backup CD's for and told her not to lose them. She then promptly lost them and we had to call HP. They didn't have the disks in stock but were happy to pawn us off on a company that had the CD's at $29.95.
