Hello.
2 computer network. 1. Vista home basic connects directly to the internet. 2. Xp home connects to internet through the Vista machine using ICS file and printer sharing has NEVER worked and microsoft techs could not fix it over the phone. Finally got internet working but the Vista machine (host) keeps losing the internet and only a reboot can fix the internet again. Xp doesn't lose the internet. Vista machine is using Windows Firewall. I uninstalled Norton firewall as instructed by Microsoft but that didn't help. xp machine has Trend micro. Net view command can see both computers. Network connections shows both computers in the list. Clicking on the remote computer gets "network path not found error". As far as losing the internet connection, my isp told me I need to get a router. But if hubs were no longer an option with Vista, why would ICS even be an option or a service on Vista. Heard once that the host computer is supposed to have TWO nic cards (but that microsoft never tells anyone that) for ICS. ISP and Compaq says that one nic card is enough. Microsoft Tech support could not figure out why my Network Discovery says "custom" instead of "on" or "off". When I turn on Network discovery, it still says custom. Microsoft tech said she never seen that problem before and could not solve it. XP machine installed Link layer technology things. I don't have a router. I have a hub. It does not need firmware or any software to run. Hub manufacturer says it is a windows problem because my config is correct. Microsoft, after 3 hours, had me call the hub manufacturer but the hub is fine. It has been more than three months so I have to pay for email technical support from Microsoft even though this original problem from April is still here. Network Magic program was supposed to fix everything but it doesn't work. What next should I do to get file and printer sharing to work and to quit losing internet on Vista machine. I am really sorry. I have been searching for help on this problem too long and been on the phone with microsoft, compaq, etc too long. Old posts are leading me to other posts in part swedish and broken english. I just have to do a NEW post to a question or two you've probably answered in the past but I can't find anything. |

1. you DO need two NICs for ICS
2. I can't second guess all the reasons that ICS is still offered, but 3. you need a router for multiple reasons. first and foremost is that it will protect you at a basic level from some of the nasties out there. you also won't have to leave the host ICS computer running and directly exposed to the Internet. 4. you can get a router for $20 if you look around.
