On my IBM Aptiva 2163-580, a 56K modem is installed, and
has been used successfully on Windows ME in the past. Under Windows XP, however, it will no longer connect at full 56K, but only at 26.5K! How to fix this??? |

Hello
Since upgrading to your new OS have you updated your Aptiva to the correct modem driver, and maybe it's not your modem could be your phone line, but somethign to look at just just make sure you have th emost recent driver installed for you modem that supports XP(give that a try) Alvin Casey Oldem wrote: > On my IBM Aptiva 2163-580, a 56K modem is installed, and > has been used successfully on Windows ME in the past. > Under Windows XP, however, it will no longer connect at > full 56K, but only at 26.5K! Look for updated drivers from your modem's manufacturer.
What were you consistently connecting at with ME? >-----Original Message----- >On my IBM Aptiva 2163-580, a 56K modem is installed, and >has been used successfully on Windows ME in the past. >Under Windows XP, however, it will no longer connect at >full 56K, but only at 26.5K! I have been unable to find Modem drivers for XP, even
after visiting IBM's site for obtaining them. (They don't feel that an update to a modem's driver should be needed!) >-----Original Message----- >Hello > >Since upgrading to your new OS have you updated your Aptiva >to the correct modem driver, and maybe it's not your modem could >be your phone line, but somethign to look at just just make sure >you have th emost recent driver installed for you modem that >supports XP(give that a try) > >Alvin > > >Casey Oldem wrote: > >> On my IBM Aptiva 2163-580, a 56K modem is installed, and >> has been used successfully on Windows ME in the past. >> Under Windows XP, however, it will no longer connect at >> full 56K, but only at 26.5K! And by the way > you do need to have XP drivers for your modem and IBM > should provide them > Why should IBM have to provide them, you pillocking idiot? The OP stated specifically that the machine came with ME, soooooooo IBM won't support his PC, no matter, if and when he changed the OS on that PC. Warranty is gone, and IBM has one less ****wit to deal with, but now he deals with you! To the OP, find the maker of your modem, model number, etc, and attempt to do a Google search for a driver that works with XP for your modem. If you need to know your model, click start/run, then type (no quotes) "msinfo32". After it finishes loading, in the left column, expand the "components" tree, then highlight modem (or more if needed), to reveal your model. |

How to fix this??? Just to check: You do have the right driver for the XP machine, right? My recollection of the start of this thread is that you said you had been using it with XP for some time, but the slowdown is recent. A couple of areas you can look at. Go to your communication port setting. Control Panel \ System \ Hardware\ device manager Click Ports to expand, then right-click Communications port to see properties. Set to 57600. While you're in the neighbourhood, look at Advanced settings. Default is fifo settings checked, sliders at the maximum. Okay your way out of this area and the comport. Still in the device manager, expand modem, see that port speed matches. At this point you might as well reboot and see if things have improved. Another area that my ISP recommends changing (might be individual to that ISP): Control Panel \ Network connections. Right-click your provider name. Networking tab. Click settings in the "type of dial-up" area. Clear all boxes. Reboot. |
