Default Vista Start Button disabled for unknown reasons

Sometimes while leaving the computer on my vista start button becomes
disabled. I do not know if this is due to a certain web page that was viewed
or a program that was opened. I have tried stopping unnecessary programs on
the task manager with no success. The only solution I have found is
restarting my computer. This gets very annoying, can anyone help me out with
this problem?
