Dale,
Don't just delete profile folders without putting some thought in to this and backing up your system. With that said, the official way to remove profile folders is by right-clicking My Computer, clicking Properties, and then clicking Settings under User Profiles on the Advanced tab. Select each profile you want to remove, and then click Delete. Here's the inside bit. Windows XP stores user profile information in the following registry key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList. Each subkey corresponds to a single user profile folder, and the value ProfileImagePath contains the path to the profile's folder. I'm betting that you can take it from there. Be very careful. Subject: How to tidy up docs & settings folder. After having to reinstall XP a few times over the last few years, I've got some superfluous folders in my 'Documents and Settings' folders. The Documents and Settings folder currently looks a bit like this (showing hidden files)... Administrator Administrator.MYNET All Users All Users.WINDOWS Dale.MYNET Dale.MYNET.000 Default User Default User.WINDOWS LocalService LocalService.NT.AUTHORITY LocalService.NT.AUTHORITY.000 LocalService.NT.AUTHORITY.001 NetworkService NetworkService.NT.AUTHORITY NetworkService.NT.AUTHORITY.000 NetworkService.NT.AUTHORITY.001 As you can see, it's a bit of a mess. Can I safely delete the older versions of LocalService & NetworkService? Obviously, the most recent ones will most likely have the larger number suffix numbers. Is there a safe way of renaming those suffixes so that they simply become.... The superfluous profile folders are all remnants from previous installations of XP and never appear on the profile list. >Here's the inside bit. I can now see which folders are currently being used. Still a little worried about the renaming part though. >-----Original Message----- >From: Dale Walker [mailto:dale@sorted.org] >Posted At: Monday, December 01, 2003 10:12 PM >Posted To: general >Conversation: How to tidy up docs & settings folder. >Subject: How to tidy up docs & settings folder. > > >After having to reinstall XP a few times over the last few years, I've >got some superfluous folders in my 'Documents and Settings' folders. > >The Documents and Settings folder currently looks a bit like this >(showing hidden files)... > >Administrator >Administrator.MYNET >All Users >All Users.WINDOWS >Dale.MYNET >Dale.MYNET.000 >Default User >Default User.WINDOWS >LocalService >LocalService.NT.AUTHORITY >LocalService.NT.AUTHORITY.000 >LocalService.NT.AUTHORITY.001 >NetworkService >NetworkService.NT.AUTHORITY >NetworkService.NT.AUTHORITY.000 >NetworkService.NT.AUTHORITY.001 > >As you can see, it's a bit of a mess. > >Can I safely delete the older versions of LocalService & NetworkService? > >Obviously, the most recent ones will most likely have the larger number >suffix numbers.
