Under my Documents & Settings folder, I have to older user folders and I
would like to delete them. I know that I SHOULD NOT delete mine, but if I delete the other users will this effect my computer at all? Boot up, start menus? I know to backup any files that I have created. The thing is, this folder combined is 14GB! I need to free up some space, and this would help quite a bit. Let me know which folders I can and can not delete if possible. Thank you! Mike |

Yes, you can delete these Folders and it will not affect your account, if these users not on this machine any more you can even delete their accounts from the machine. The accounts of those users located here: C:\Documents and Settings\User. How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151 You can also download this tool: http://www.ccleaner.com Please read the help file with it to use it to work for you and in the right direction as it can be a pain if you deleted something you want or a system file/folder. If these are not for system accounts such as Default User, Administrator or Owner (an OEM installed account), it should be fine. When you use Control Panel> Users and delete a user, you will be prompted as to whether you want to keep their documents or not. You can say yes or no. If you say yes, the user's files will be placed in an accessible folder. You can sort through them at your leisure - tossing what is no longer needed and moving files that you would like to keep to other folder. If you happen to run into an "access denied" message when trying to access any files that belonged to former users, they are still being protected for the deleted user. By taking ownership of the files, you'll be able to open them for review. For directions on how to do that, open up Help and Support (Start> Help and Support) and look up the topic "take ownership." -- Sharon F MS-MVP ~ Windows Shell/User |
