I have just been given a computer from a friend, but the hard disk is fried.
I have put another HDD in and I am about to reinstall XP back on it. I have the genuine windows XP product code which was stuck on the side of the computer case, the only problem is that I don't know whether it is XP home edition or XP professional edition! Is there any way of telling which edition it is from the product key? The key starts with: XRJP4 |

The key starts with: XRJP4 If it is a Microsoft OEM Product Key sticker then it should also contain, in fine print, the Windows XP Version name. Other than that there is no way that I am aware to determine the product version name from the product key, although it is encrypted into it. Ron Martell Duncan B.C. Thanks Ron
The sticker is very warn and I could only just make out the product code (I had to guess some of the characters). I have actualy sorted the problem now. I phoned Microsoft, explained the problem to they, gave them the key code and they verified the code and told me it was XP Home code. Simple as that. So any one else with this problem, just give mocrosoft a call.
