Default Backup emails in Vista

I need to format my laptop and want to backup my Inbox, Sent Items and my
Contacts from Windows Mail and save them to my external hard drive. Following
formatting, I then want to reinstate the previously backed up emails and
Contacts to their original location in Windows Mail.

Hope someone can give me a step by step guide on how to properly complete
this.

Thanks Mac,

Does "File, Export, Messages" backup both my Inbox and my Sent Items?

Does it back anything else up from my Windows Mail?

I assume to reinstate them I type "File, Import, Messages" and then go to
the location on my external hard drive where I originally exported them to?

Does it matter that I have previously compacted my emails?

Should do all messages. Yes re import. Compacting doesn't matter.

I'm no longer using WM having moved over to Windows Live Mail (the options
are different for me - contacts I'd have to move differently).
