That is what is being touted, but it is hardly an upgrade of the Windows
Mail program. It may be a follow-on. But I for one won't use a web based
system. I have Mozilla Thunderbird and will use it as my newsreader. I use
Office Outlook for e-mail.

Web based system?
WLM isn't one of those.
WLM is an email client..

It might someday become one, if I ever manage to get a version that
actually works

Charles,

I also use Thunderbird for newsgroups and Outlook for email.

Windows Live Mail is not "web based", it's an actual email and
newsreader client. It's okay for email and a bit better than WM
for newsgroups. But, it still doesn't handle newsgroups nearly as
well as Thunderbird.

Apart from the grievous functional deficiencies of
Thunderbird as a newsreader.

Any "grievous functional deficiencies" Thunderbird may
have, are minor compared to WM and WLM horrid handling
and ultimately choking many times while trying to read newsgroups.

The only thing that I wish Thunderbird would do, is mark cross-posted
messages read once you read them in one group. Otherwise, it's simply
a better program than WM or WLM.

I'm not getting any of the rumored performance problems with
WLM newsgroup processing.

For instance... I just marked as read 3000 Vista.general posts
and it took a couple of seconds max.

From a stability and performance POV
WLM is a big improvement on WM.

"rumored". You must be joking.

You must be special.

It's an improvement, yes. IMO, it's not a "big"
improvement. Not yet.
