Following the suggestion of another thread in this group, I ditched the
McAfee product that I was using for NOD32 and have so far noticed an
improvement. The performance still isn't what it should be, but it seems like
the gap has narrowed. It's hard to say for certain without a more quantitive
benchmark though.

The McAfee product was provided free by "Comcast" (hence the desire to use
automatically it). Over the years I've seen McAfee go from a nice lean virus
scanner in the DOS days to a bloated hog with poor customization in the
XP/Vista days.
