I am trying to start Dungeon Siege Legends of Aranna on my notebook
(T40p) but get an apparently common error: A fatal error has occurred and the app must shut down. Unable to enumerate any DirectDraw devices installed on this system. [Note: This error can occur if another application has exclusive control of the display. For example, NetMeeting's desktop sharing feature may be enabled or you are trying to run this app through a remote desktop in Windows XP or Terminal Server. It can also occur if your hardware does not support 3D acceleration or if your video driver does not properly support DirectX 8.] MS suggests to check the graphics card memory in the dxdiag settings (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902423), so I did. Interestingly the dxdiag settings say I have no approx. total memory at all. I do know however, that my graphics card has 64MB of memory (and also 3D hardware acceleration). How is this possible? I installed the latest DirectX version for WIndowsXP (9.0c), I installed the latest graphics driver, I checked my BIOS but nothing helped. Any suggestions? Thanks, Petra |

Which drivers and which version number did you install? The FireGL 9000 is a mobility workstation graphics card designed more for OpenGL and CAD work. It'll do DirectX 8.1 support, but it's not really gaming card in any way. Some games may work, others dont. Installing DX 9.0c may have been an issue .. Remember it's based on the Radeon 9000 mobility series, so don't expect much in the way of 3D play, although the requirements for that particular game are quite low. |

In my hardware settings the graphics card driver shows up as number: Version 6.14.10.6547 Date: 16.11.2006. What I downloaded and installed was this: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/s...ocid=MIGR-41918 Version: 8.133.2.1.1-061116a Release Date: 2007/02/02 So that also seems a bit odd. Why doesn't my graphics driver number show up as the latest one I installed? The DirectX version I installed is DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) |

Remember, when you install drivers, you are installing a group of files. Not
every file in the group gets updated with each new driver release. 8.133.2.1.1-061116a denotes driver package version. 6.14.10.6547 denotes the 2D driver file version inside the package. So you can have a driver package released in Feb. 2007, but with a 2D driver file that has remained unchanged since Nov. 2006. -- "War is the continuation of politics by other means.
