Computer Freezes When Editing Video

Video Card: ATI Radeon 9800 (most recent drivers installed)
DirectX: Most recent version installed
OS: Windows XP Pro
Editing Software: As of right now, Windows Movie Maker & Sonic MyDVD

Problem:

About two weeks ago my system just decided it didn't want to play
video anymore. I tweaked and poked around with some features in media
player and got it to play. At this point, I went in and edited videos
with Movie Maker with no problem. Prior to this I had never had any
trouble editing and burning videos with MyDVD. Then, shortly
thereafter, my system decided I could play any video I wanted, but if
I tried to edit anything, my whole system would freeze up and I would
have to manually reboot the system.

If I didn't have a huge amount of videos to pull off my TiVo and burn
to DVDs, I probably wouldn't even care (or know) about this problem.
But the fact of the matter is - I do. So I thought I'd start here and
see if anyone can tell me if this is a video card problem. Then I'll
move forward from there.

What is the configuration of the rest of your system, CPU speed? RAM? I
ask this because video editing does require alot of processing power. Like
you I also have the Radeon 9800 along with a 3.0GHZ pentium 4 and 1 gig of
RAM. Editing videos using VideoRedo doesn't cause any problems. Burning
videos to DVD using Ulead MovieFactory doesn't cause any freeze ups but
taskmanager does show 90-100% CPU usage.
Another question, any particular reason why your using TIVO? For the
fraction of the cost of a TIVO you can purchase and install a TV tuner card
in your PC and also avoid the monthly subscription costs associated with
TIVO.

You probably never had a TiVo. Sometimes it's worth a few dollars more.

I don't remember the R9800 as being a ViVo card, but what capture
software are you using?

That you got Sonic MyDVD to work in the first place, should be
considered an accomplishment. Try reinstalling it, and see if that
fixes your problem. (But I would start looking at a better DVD
authoring program. Ulead's Movie Factory series is well liked,
but my favorite is TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6.)

Are you capturing in DVD compliant MPEG, or some other
format?

You're right, I never did have a TiVo. Perhaps I was a little to haste in
my judgement of TiVo. For me it just seems more convient to capture to
video directly to my PC's HD and edit in the PC.

I'm using a Hauppauge WinTv-250 card and using the software provided with
it.
