Default Windows XP Service Pack 2 won't install.

Last night I reformatted my computer, it was acting really weird
lately(internet explorer kept opening on it's own with pop ups, programs
wouldn't shut down, error messages kept popping up, and the computer got
really really slow). I ran several virus scans and spyware scans but nothing
was found any of the times so that is why I decided to reformat it. Anyways,
I installed almost all the updates except for the Service Pack 2, every time
I try to install it it says it's encountered a problem and needs to close.

I don't know if this is important/needed but here's the signature:

AppName: update.exe AppVer: 5.5.1005.0 AppStamp:40f8193a
ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 ModStamp:00000000
fDebug: 0 Offset: 35df275d

Is there anything I can do to prevent the error and get SP2 installed on my
computer?

Thanks for taking the time for reading this and any help/info you can
provide me with!

To save yourself some time and headache, rather than trying to fix a munged
up clean install, reformat and reinstall again, this time, install SP2 first
thing, right after the install finishes, before you do anything else.
Download it from here and save it to cd before you reformat. Yes it says
network install, it is the full install package.

Why would 1 do that, windows update doesnt start updating a new xp install with
SP2,instead thier are about a dozen or 2 installs before it even offers
SP2.....Oh
yea, ever think of hardware software/drivers installs,or does 1 think software
before hardware..

Again Andrew, you provide useless, entirely incorrect information, one would
think you'd get tired of constantly being proven wrong by now. NO updates
have to be applied before installing SP2 on a pre SP2 fresh installation. Do
us all a favor and go away.
