You should have data backups anyway "daver55" <daver55@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A0988FBF-CA94-481F-A097-636988B35440@microsoft.com... > I tried to reinstall windows xp pro tonight only to get the error that it was > a different version. Hi daver55,
Perhaps you should consider creating a bootable, slipstreamed install CD. You could follow the instructions here: Slipstreamed Windows XP CD Using SP2 http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm (or do a web search for slipstreaming instructions, as plenty of them abound!) Also, many people seem pleased with having used autostreamer to slipstream: http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/...ostreamer.shtml Regards, -- Patti MacLeod Microsoft MVP - Windows Shell/User "daver55" wrote: > I tried to reinstall windows xp pro tonight only to get the error that it was > a different version. First off, you should be starting the reinstall by booting from the XP installation CD. The error message you cite appears if you try to start the installation from within Windows. Next, as has already been pointed out, you can create an installation CD that includes SP2 by creating a "slipstreamed" CD. Create a Slip Stream version of Windows XP http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/slipstream.htm Here are some of the files you'll need to obtain in order to follow this procedure: Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...us/default.mspx AutoStreamer 1.0.33 http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/1092632287/1 CDBurner XPPro http://www.cdburnerxp.se/download.php Here are some other resources you might want to take a look at: How to use AutoStreamer to Slipstream Windows XP Service Pack 2 http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/...tostreamer.html Slipstreamed Windows XP CD Using SP2 http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Wind...sp2-bootcd.html How can I slipstream service packs into the Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 media? http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2000...ipstreaming.htm Universal Windows Slipstreaming and Bootable CD Guide http://www.msfn.org/articles.php?ac...&showarticle=49 Finally, before you attempt to perform a repair installation, you should back up any file and folders you consider important. Test your backup to make sure all the files are recoverable.
