Hi,
Can't access task manager, control- alt -delete, I get the usual box but when I select Task Manager I just get an option to log off or disconnect, neither does sfc /scannow work, when I run this again the usual box appears - sits there for a few minutes , does nothing and clears off. Ran a few virus checks - a few trojan horses which I deleted, did web search to no avail. TIA Bob. |

Usually caused by Trojan, Viruses and Spywares. Try the following see if this
helps: If you have Windows XP Professional then do one thing: 1. Click Start - Run - type GPEDIT.MSC and press enter 2. Expand To: User Configuration Administrative Templates System Ctrl+Alt+Del Option 3. Look in the right side pane. Set all 4 options in the right side pane to "Disable" if they are already configured to "Not Configured" or "Enable" If that doesn't help then or you have Windows XP Home Edition 1. Click Start - Run - type REGEDIT and press enter 2. Expand To: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System. In the right-side pane, check if the value exists like: DisbaleChangePassword DisbaleLockWorkstation DisableTaskMgr Delete all those entries. Check if you can open Task Manager now or Restart your computer once. Meanwhile check the following link and see if this helps you: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555480 Let us know, if any of works. GPEDIT.MSC wont open. Anyway I'll keep trying, Again thanks for your help. Try this link. Click on Enable under Task Manager and then click Run. After completion make a restart. Must scan your PC for Malwares. Hope this help, let us know. -- Was this post helpful to you? Try this solution - by Malke. Let us know which one works for you.
First make sure that the computer is completely virus/malware-free since malware is a prime culprit for disabling the Task Manager. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com...emoving_Malware If the machine is clean, see: Enable the Task Manager (Line 51) http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Lift Restrictions - Task Manager, Regedit and CMD (Line 275) http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Troubleshooting the Task Manager http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_t.htm#tm http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Taskmanager_error.htm - Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator fix Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" Tried all that - no luck - the machine's been crawling along for some time
now- did several AVG checks-still have the impression theres a virus there somewhere (kid use it a lot) Last few days whenever I boot up there's a flashing warning sign on black and white start up screen urging me to back up data that hard drive is in imminent danger of dying, could this be true or would a virus cause this considering it still wont allow to open task manager or run sfc /scannow(starts-sit there for few mins and clears off with itself. Recently ran msconfig, got rid of few unnecessary programs at start up, started getting error messages at start up (cannot find etc.) so went back to general tab and selected al again but still getting these error messages - cannot find certain files (box-like shapes) I dont know, I just dont know. Thanks RajKohli for sticking with this so far, you've done you bit, dont blame you if you throw in the towel - many thanks again. Give it a try:
1. Start Windows in Safe Mode 2. Goto Control Panel - Add / Remove Programs - uninstall all unnecessary applications. 3. Run MSCONFIG in Safe Mode and uncheck all the applications from Startup tab except your Anti-Virus and Spyware entries. 4. Restart your computer and run Windows in Normal mode. See, if the Task Manager is still disabled. If yes, then try the previous fix and run an online scan as suggestted. Hope this help, let us know! Most drives have SMART technology built in and most modern systems are SMART capable. What this means is the system board's BIOS has bits that can translate the warning signals originating from the hard drive and pass them on to you (the black and white screen you're seeing). SMART warns when conditions are ripe for a hard drive to fail (do an internet search for S.M.A.R.T. to learn more about this technology). There should be records in Event Viewer repeating the warnings. In my experience with SMART, it is right 99% of the time. I would start getting important data off the hard drive. Then, if the drive is still under warranty, contact the drive manufacturer. That will start the process of getting the drive replaced. If the drive is no longer under warranty, get a new replacement drive AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. NOTE: If the drive still hasn't failed by the time it's replaced count yourself lucky and do not trust it as a spare drive. -- Sharon F MS-MVP ~ Windows Shell/User |
