Default Laptop Mouse

I am using the pad mouse on my laptop and Vista seems to make the arrow turn
into a directional cursor which moves me all over the page or opens things
without me clicking.

very annoying!

Help!

I know when I first got a laptop with a mouse pad I found that I was
unconsciously dragging a thumb or finger across the pad while I was typing.
Drove me crazy. If "single-clicking" was turned on, it could open random
things too. I had to actively work at keeping my fingers/thumbs away from
the pad.
