Default Vista Really slow, what could be a problem !

I have very decent configuration Dell machine as below

P4 3.4 HGz,
4 GB RAM
500 GB Hard Disk
256 MB Graphics card.

My mahcine is really slow, loads slow, works slow, etc. Earlier, I had
Windows XP Professional SP2 on the same configuraiton and it was working
great...now Vista disappointed me. Also I get those alerts (Do you want to
contunie? ) very often...how should I tune my Vista machine for better
performance...I am using Vista Ultimate...

Thanks

What programs are running in the background?
If you have Norton or McAfee uninstall them.

I am using Microsoft Live One care 90 days free trial....so should I
uninstall that for better performance...

I guess Windows XP Professional was the biggest successful OS in Microsoft's
history....really did well ....Even I felt Windows 2003 better than Vista...

Another thing, I still dont understand the start menu advantages in
Vista...what brings benefit over the earlier mechanism....the Vista one is
really confusing ....
