Default 16:9 AVI produces distorted WMV?

It's been a while since I used MM2 so maybe I've forgotten some
basics. I wanted to make a smallish WMV out of a largish AVI, to
upload for discussion in a forum. The AVI was 16:9 format (played fine
in VirtualDub etc). For Save Movie I chose the default 'Best quality
on my computer'. MM2 was set to 16:9. But the result was squashed in
from the sides, as if it was 4:3.

By trial/error in Other Settings I did eventually find an option that
gave a correct result. But why don't all of them?
