I started to have these long black lines appear to the left side of the
message. They appear in some of the messages that I receive or am sending in
reply to. How do I get rid of them? I didn't have them before, but now they
are here.

You can remove them via Tools | Options | Send | HTML Settings and uncheck
indent on reply. Also in the message itself, you can click the decrease
indent button on the formatting toolbar to remove it.
