Default Handle Messages Without Opening

I notice that when I want to move or delete a message, I have to select it -
naturally. However, as soon as I right-click on it to select the desired
action ( move to, delete, mark as read, etc., ) the message opens.

This seems to me to be potentially dangerous.

Is there some setting I'm missing that will allow me to handle messages
without having them open?

Thanks,

Ed

Do you mean previewed rather than opened. Tools - Options - Read you can set
to download message automatically and/or to preview as TEXT ONLY (nothing
dangerous about that), Or turn the Preview pane off on the View menu -
Layout ...

Use View | Layout and disable the Preview Pane (you can put a button on the
toolbar for that) and the select the junk messages and do a SHIFT-DEL on
them.
