i have all my files in a directory called windows.old , i want to be able to
use all the programs i had with xp , since i cannot run anymore xp. I have all in the same hardrive and the same partition. |

You need to install the softwares again. Programs write their settings and
references to registry. Not to mention, Vista is still beta and i would be very carefull with using vista as main desktop. Even if something works now, it might not work at next build etc. Also at this point if you work with some files, the OS might be so unstable at some parts that it will corrupt your files. Files you can move with copying. -- Try, learn, experience. Ok, so now , how can i get my old windows back ?
since instaltion of vista created that directory(windows.old) i cannot access it from the start up menu ,where i am offered 'previus version of windows 'and' windows vista' but only Vista's choise works. Hate to say this, but I think "you're screwed". The MS website clearly, and
specifically warns the potential risks associated with installing this "in a production" or "main" computer environment. You might want to read up on how others are installing it. The desired method is to install either "virtually" or in a dual-boot environment. I spent $29, and got a partition manager software to resize and move my free space on my c: drive, and then create a new partition just for Vista. It seems to be working okay - 'cept for all the damn security warnings. Hope you can find a work-around solution.
