Default wierd..can only connect to internet when using router

I've tried everything. For some reason I am only able to connect to the
internet when using my Linksys WRT54G router. If I disconnect from router and
try to connect directly from my modem I get an "unidentified network" message
and am unable to connect to internet. I've already tried different cables,
ipconfig /release and renew, rebooting, disabling IPV6, disabling and
re-enabling network adapters, disabling firewall. I've tried the Vista
"repair" tools (ie repair connection, reboot modem, new ip address, etc.).
NOTHING WORKS!! Usually I've had this problem when trying to use my router
but this is the other way around. IPCONFIG /ALL shows that both of my network
adapters are disconnected. As soon as I connect to my router, am able to
connect to internet....wierd. TIA.

I had a similar problem when I got my cable connection set up. My cable
company only issues out 1 IP address to my home, so when I first connected
with my desktop, I had no problem connecting to the internet, when I plugged
the laptop and my hub (which doesn't assign IP addresses), the laptop could
not connect. In fact it wouldn't even get an IP address assigned. From what
I was able to research, the MAC address on the network card was registered
in their DHCP and I had to clone that MAC address to the router in order to
have the router have the IP address assigned to it. After that I had no
problem. I think it took about a day for them to release the IP address. You
might want to contact your ISP to see if they do the same thing.

I just upgraded to vista and I never had this problem with XP. I've always
been able too connect to the internet using my router or directly connected
to my modem (dsl). Also I have a laptop running XP and I can still directly
connect to the intenet through my dsl modem.
