I have disabled my firewall to test ports in Live Messenger 8.
When I tried to re-enable it, even running as admin, I got this messege: "windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service." Where could be the problem and how to fix this issue? Thanks -- Merzhin Brittany - France |

OK, Start > Run > services.msc > Double click on the "Windows Firewall"
service and select the Startup type to Automatic and click on Start to start the service. Is this Windows XP or Windows Vista? Have you tried using System restore to
see if it will fix this issue? -- -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "Merzhin" <keguellecATmsn.com> wrote in message news:%23C1EKW0TGHA.1868@TK2MSFTNGP09.phx.gbl... >I have disabled my firewall to test ports in Live Messenger 8. > When I tried to re-enable it, even running as admin, I got this messege: > "windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service." > Where could be the problem and how to fix this issue? > > Thanks > -- > Merzhin > Brittany - France > |

Thanks Zack,
But I've already tried to start the Firewall service and this is precisely the message I've got. Are you using Norton Systemworks out of interest? I know someone who
lost the firewall functionality after installing that on XP, maybe it could the same issue...? Hi Andre,
I am running Vista Feb CTP B5308. Seeing this problem with firewall, I immediately tried to restore. But, after restart, SR told me it was not able to restore. I guess the problem is deeper. -- Merzhin Brittany - France "Andre Da Costa [Extended64]" <andred25@hotmail.com> a écrit dans le message de news: %23nJxl10TGHA.2656@TK2MSFTNGP10.phx.gbl... > Is this Windows XP or Windows Vista? Maybe you could just do a reinstall over 5308, not necessarily reinstalling,
but upgrade the existing installation with the 5308 DVD. -- -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "Merzhin" <keguellecATmsn.com> wrote in message news:uBt$O70TGHA.3888@TK2MSFTNGP10.phx.gbl... > Thanks Zack, > But I've already tried to start the Firewall service and this is precisely > the message I've got. > "windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service." > > -- > Merzhin > Brittany - France > "Zack Whittaker (R2 Mentor)" <admin@zacknet.co.uk> a écrit dans le message > de news: enQeg00TGHA.4300@TK2MSFTNGP14.phx.gbl... >> OK, Start > Run > services.msc > Double click on the "Windows Firewall" >> service and select the Startup type to Automatic and click on Start to >> start the service. Hi Scøtt,
No I have only NOD32 installed as antivirus software. I do test Vista with its own security features. Thanks for your suggestion. > Are you using Norton Systemworks out of interest? Yes, I've just run (as admin) sfc /scannow command without success.
Your suggestion seems to be the best way to repair Vista. I will save my files and settings before and try an upgrade with DVD. If not possible, I will have to reinstall Vista completely... -- Merzhin Brittany - France "Andre Da Costa [Extended64]" <andred25@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:eWYX3D1TGHA.736@TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl... > Maybe you could just do a reinstall over 5308, not necessarily > reinstalling, but upgrade the existing installation with the 5308 DVD. > -- > -- > Andre > Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com > Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com > Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre > http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta > > "Merzhin" <keguellecATmsn.com> wrote in message > news:uBt$O70TGHA.3888@TK2MSFTNGP10.phx.gbl... >> Thanks Zack, >> But I've already tried to start the Firewall service and this is >> precisely the message I've got. >> "windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service." >> >> -- >> Merzhin >> Brittany - France >> "Zack Whittaker (R2 Mentor)" <admin@zacknet.co.uk> a écrit dans le >> message de news: enQeg00TGHA.4300@TK2MSFTNGP14.phx.gbl... >>> OK, Start > Run > services.msc > Double click on the "Windows Firewall" >>> service and select the Startup type to Automatic and click on Start to >>> start the service. Before you try to change anything, I'd check out the Event Log to see if
there are any error messages which correspond to the firewall problem. In particular, look for EventID 7042...
