Default Windows Photo Gallery hide toolbars etc

The Photo Gallery in XP had a nice little icon bar on the bottom bar
with everything I needed. The new one in Vista has a giant bar on the
bottom that looks like a video recorder and another on top with things
like "Make a Video". All I want is to see my jpgs etc - this is a
terrible waste of screen space. I can't make videos from jpgs and if I
could I would start up a video app.
Can I hide that top toolbar?
Can I make the bottom one a normal size?
Can I run the old WinXP photo viewer on my machine?

I am so totally sick of Vista. Can you send back back the box after
you have opened it and get your money back from Microsoft? So far I
have seen only one good UI feature... when you do file open you can
see the directory tree instead of just the path as XP. All else is
dreadful.
