Control Panel | Programs | Default Programs | Associate file type or
protocol with a program. I really didn't have any trouble finding it when I
wanted it the first time.

How do you change (edit) the open action for a given program now?

At the moment I am using a component of Creative Element Power Tools
(trial). But I only really want the File Type Doctor component, and I don't
want to pay for it either. But it is quite nice. A lot better than the
File Types tab in XP.

No, I mean suppose there is a "%1" or something you have to add or you have
to verify the settings for the URL HTTP protocol such as described here:
www.oehelp.com/ielnk.aspx

My point is that you cannot "edit" the action. You can just provide another
program. The actual strings are not editable anymore. How would you
uncheck "use DDE" here?

Damn overtype bug again! <GRR>

That was my point. You can only change these things in the registry now, so
articles such as that recent one on IE7 links won't apply at all, but rather
users will now have to go to the registry to fix file association problems.
That issue already came up in the WinMail NG relative to the mailto
protocol.

So now we'll have to tell the users to use Regedit, since there no longer is
a GUI method.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command

The (Default) value is:

"D:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

then

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\ddeexec

and

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\ddeexec\Application

and then

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\ddeexec\Topic

and all the values under each of those keys.

Nice job, Microsoft! So much for avoiding editing the registry directly by
the users.
