Do you have the appropriate holes poked in your firewall?

Have you installed the Beta 3 update for WMDC?

I had to poke multiple holes through Defender for my WMDC to work properly.
You'd think that two brand new MS products would work out of the box together, but apparently not. They are both in Beta still though, I think. I don't remember the exact symptoms I had, but I seem to remember getting the funky connect noises, but not much activity. I don't know if I could see the files on the unit or sync with Media player, though.
