avi files

i am running RTM 32-bit. but there seems to be a conflict with the xvid
codec. the video plays fine, but everytime i open up a folder with avi's in
it i get this message "COM Sorrugate not responding". this only happens with
avi files. has anybody else noticed this?

You need to get a codec pack that will support XVID and DIVX, my suggestion
is to get the FFDShow pack, it plays just about everything, and I haven't
seen any conflicts with Vista using it. Not to mention, it will work with
MCE and allow you to play your XVID and DIVX movies in Media Center.

I've seen a few folks mention that this is caused by having Nero installed.
I've also seen a few folks mention that uninstalling Nero does away with
this error. I've noticed that I have started receiving that same error "COM
Sorrugate not responding" after installing Nero. Maybe Nero will come out
with an update that will correct this problem.

Correct, Nero 7.5.7.0 does cause issues in media folders. However, the COM
Surrogate usually comes from an un-supported Codec. The Nero error, is a
Run32 error that happens when you go into a media folder. That error isn't
really associated with the .AVI files, but the .MPG files. I don't know why
Nero, all of a sudden doesn't like the MPG format, but it doesn't.
With Com Surrogate errors, there are a couple reasons you get it. Either you
have a fouled Codec pack, Common with the KLite pack. Installing the
standard DivX and XviD codecs, many times will error out, or not completely
install. And again, with these codecs, you only get one version of the
codec. DivX usually covers all DivX codecs, however, it doesn't seem to like
to integrate itself into Vista, and moreover, Media Center.
Commonly, I suggest people get the FFDShow pack, which has all the codecs
one would usually need, and integrates itself into Vista, and MCE, allowing
you to watch your videos in Windows Media Player 11, and in Media Center, if
you add your video files into the "Watched Folders" in your media library.
Now, I am sure one can un-install outdated or incompatible Codec packs,
though it may cause more issues. Under RC1, I had to do a complete
re-install, then install FFDShow. After that, I never got a COM Surrogate
error again. Then I Installed Nero 7.5.7.0, and now I have the Run32 error.
I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles though.

The COM Surrogate error goes away when Nero is uninstalled as well

I've emailed Nero tech support about this problem, hopefully they will find
out what's causing it.
