Default Vista hangs at Welcome

Starting 2 days ago, I can't get into Vista RC1 (or anything on my laptop).
When I turn it on, I click my user icon and then it hangs at the Welcome
sign. (Doesn't make me feel very welcome!)

Booting from the CD, I've done several system restores and the utility that
fixes startup problems -- nothing helps.

When I try safe mode, it asks me for my name and password but doesn't accept
it. I'm 95% sure I know it, but I had set it to not require it, so I haven't
used it for a few days.

Anyone have any ideas? I haven't tried re-installing yet- that's next. I'm
hoping I won't have to throw the new laptop away!

Ellen

Try restarting in safe mode, log into the account, open Control Panel >
Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > expand Windows Logs > click System.
Check to see if there are any error messages relating to system startup and
report back here.

I am not aware of it working in safe mode, but I do recommend its use in
Real mode.
