Default Defagmenter...haha... Defragmenter

Does anyone else think Microsoft should quickly change the interface with
defragmenter??? I cant tell if Vista had Locked up, or if it is working, they
need the old screen that showed what it was doing. I like when my computer
does some repairs to let me know the details not keep them hidden. Also I
miss all those Pretty Colors, Especially the Red one....haha. Anyone agree?

I agree with you. I hate the new disk defragmenter - it also takes a lot
longer to defragment with it than XP's defragmenter. It seems with every
release of Windows, the disk defragmenter gets dumbed down more and more.

If you'd like some background on the design changes in Defrag, see our blog
post at http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/pa...menter-faq.aspx
and a recent chat transcript at
http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/pages/447168.aspx.

As for the speed issue, our defrag uses low priority CPU and I/O to reduce
the impact on performance. It's really a trade-off between system
performance and defrag speed, and we chose system performance.

But wouldn't it be just as fast as XP if the defrag is the only thing the
computer is doing?

I Agree also. But dont all of us do that anyway? (doing defrag, by itself) I
always make sure that i turn off my Screen saver, and Off power helps stuff.
I always figured...."If its 're-arranging' my harddrive, should i be writing
to it? like internet or moving files?" It use to only take a few minutes, so
it was fine, but now it took well over 2 hours, i only have a 100 gig drive
with 15% used. I just dont get it. You can only screw with something so long
until System Mechanic takes over. By the way Is System Mechanic Compatible
with Vista 64?

I hate it too!
I would like to know where it is in the process so I can make decisions
based on its progress. Like...do I have time to make and eat a PB&J. <S>
I really liked the one in win 95/98? It mesmerized me watching all those
little blocks move around. lol I too don't know if it's working or just
locked up. There is no graphic to let me know. THANK GAWD FOR THIRD PARTY
APPS I SAY!

Ha ha I miss those blocks too. See im still a kid so when doing defrag, i
used to sit there for hours watching them all change. Good memories. You can
use system mechanic if you want to. If your got it. I got a whole butt load
of "Compatibility warnings", (Its MS talk for we know our optimizers suck, so
we wont let you use theyres) Use it if you can. Trust me. But ya i miss Old
time defrag.

I really do agree with you but enabling the user to be informed more about
wot is actually happening with the defrag progress needs a little bit of
sense on the part of those responsible for its 'accession' to Vista.

Well done Vista Defragment team.

If you are looking for other employment, I woodn't mention to a future
employer that you werked on the Vista Defragment team.
