I am unable to install 5342 under VMware Workstation 5.5. It fails with a
Stop 0x7E error during the first part of the installation, ie after Windows has copied files to the HDD, and it switches to graphics mode, to where (I assume) it begins to perform the first bit of hardware detection. The install worked fine with build 5308. For what its worth, the config is as follows : VMWare WS 5.5 runnning on XP Pro Sp2 AMD XP2500+ 1GB RAM 300GB Maxtor Apparently the same thing happens under VMware GSX server.. |

Trust me on this one - if you want to run Windows Vista in a virtual
environment, get a nice XP or WS2003 based computer with IIS installed, and get Virtual Server 2005 R2 (I think there's a trial on the MSFT site somewhere) and put Vista on it in that sense. It's virtual hardware is compatible, it's easy, it's simple, and it's still a Microsoft based product )-- Zack Whittaker » ZackNET Enterprises: www.zacknet.co.uk » MSBlog on ResDev: www.msblog.org » Vista Knowledge Base: www.vistabase.co.uk » This mailing is provided "as is" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Did you try finishing the install it Safe mode? Sometimes that works, worth
a try. Also, when setting up the VM Ware did you select the Windows Vista type of VM you are going to install? -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "FredBloggs2" <fredbloggs2@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:%23XyPl2wUGHA.6084@TK2MSFTNGP14.phx.gbl... >I am unable to install 5342 under VMware Workstation 5.5. Ok, I've given it a try under XP with Virtual Server 2005 R2 and it worked.
Unfortunately, here are my comments about VS 2005 : 1. It runs very slowly 2. It needs IIS 3. It uses a browser All this before I can get a VM running. <begin rant> I am an MCSE and pro MS, but I dont like the idea of having to install IIS, and its inherent security issues, together with IE, with its security problems and slowness trying to run a VM through it. VMWare seems to be much easier, quicker, and capable of running many different types of OS, not just MS. What has MS done with build 5342 to make it incompatible ? Is it a deliberate policy to make it non-runnable under VMWare ? </end rant> As for running in Safe Mode, we never even got to that point. The install failed right at the start. Actually I got it running... but because of the 4-bit graphics (and my lack
of experience with the VMWare product I couldn't fix it) so I just rid it and put it in Virtual Server 2005 R2 instead. But it can be done ;o) -- Zack Whittaker » ZackNET Enterprises: www.zacknet.co.uk » MSBlog on ResDev: www.msblog.org » Vista Knowledge Base: www.vistabase.co.uk » This mailing is provided "as is" with no warranties, and confers no rights. So you're saying that you got build 5342 to install on VMware 5.5? Care to
share how you did it since that's the point of this post? Well it really wasn't difficult to be honest - no trick to it whatsoever. I
installed it as if it was any other operating system - except I chose "Windows Server 2003" from the operating system list instead of anything else... But as I said, only 4-bit graphics and it was slow as hell. -- Zack Whittaker » ZackNET Enterprises: www.zacknet.co.uk » MSBlog on ResDev: www.msblog.org » Vista Knowledge Base: www.vistabase.co.uk » This mailing is provided "as is" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Why did you choose Server 2003 when VM Ware has an option in the new VM list
box for Windows Vista x86 and x64 for testing? I know, if you are going to install in VM Ware on a new disk, its possible you will have to partition the drive using the Shift + F10 command and install it in that partition, since you will be asked to load drivers. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "Zack Whittaker" <admin@zacknet.co.uk> wrote in message news:%23k18MqnXGHA.3656@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > Well it really wasn't difficult to be honest - no trick to it whatsoever. > I installed it as if it was any other operating system - except I chose > "Windows Server 2003" from the operating system list instead of anything > else... > > But as I said, only 4-bit graphics and it was slow as hell. > > -- > Zack Whittaker > » ZackNET Enterprises: www.zacknet.co.uk > » MSBlog on ResDev: www.msblog.org > » Vista Knowledge Base: www.vistabase.co.uk > » This mailing is provided "as is" with no warranties, and confers no > rights.
