Where would I find the setup log? My hard disk doesn't have any partitions on
it; and the installer dies before I've created new ones.

Install XP, create a dedicated partition then install Vista, I don't Vista
currently supports installing on RAW disk. You could use the shift + F10
command when you boot off the Vista disk and create a dedicated partition
during the setup process.

Got my install working. It turned out to be a bad burn - I made a new DVD and
it installed successfully.
