Well, it looks like RC2 did not fix the modem driver problem that seemed to
show up in 5728 (worked fine in 5600). If I allow the driver to be installed by Vista, and it wants to, the next boot will blue screen. If it makes a difference, I have a Zoom PCI Voice FaxModem. Clark |

Bug it.
You might also, for S&G's, try an XP driver. The BSOD is likely due to a driver issue, so sometimes taking advantage of the backwards compatibility resolves that. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org "Clark" <who@whoknows.com> wrote in message news:E06C8A77-261C-4827-A54C-1793FCD4FA2E@microsoft.com... > Well, it looks like RC2 did not fix the modem driver problem that seemed > to show up in 5728 (worked fine in 5600). I tried the XP driver before and it did exactly the same thing. Since I
can't change the Modem.sys file, I am going to see if there are any settings I can change. It does seem strange that when the drivers are installed, the modem will work. But on reboot, it blue screens and the modem must be uninstalled to recover. It seems a little backward to me that they have broken something that wasn't broken before. I have bugged it, so either they didn't have time, or didn't bother to fix it in this build, assuming the bug report was received. Doesn't someone in the Beta Testing Program know what bugs are being addressed? Thanks, Clark "Rick "Nutcase" Rogers" <rick@mvps.org> wrote in message news:uZEBpYg6GHA.4996@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > Bug it. > > You might also, for S&G's, try an XP driver. Hi Clark,
Something about initializing the device is likely the problem, but whether it's an .ini file or the .sys file is difficult to tell. There's no public list of what's being or has been fixed and what isn't. Nor is there one for technical beta testers. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org "Clark" <who@whoknows.com> wrote in message news:22D36332-F09C-4E6F-A327-335A6500CD75@microsoft.com... >I tried the XP driver before and it did exactly the same thing. I had the same problem here with the same modem a driver here Clark. Are
you installing as a dual boot with vista on a partition that is NOT C:? My problems disappeared when I installed Vista as a dula boot to C: drive, I had previously experienced the exact same problems as you when I installed to V: drive. I think it may be badly coded drivers for the Zoom PCI modem which are hard referenced to C: so if you installed to any other drive letter you get the BSOD on reboot. No, I installed on C:--no nonstandard installations, no dual boots. The
driver works fine until a reboot. I was wondering if I could change the IRQ or comm port, but it appears that is not allowed. I was also thinking about the unimodem driver for the speaker. If I disable
just that part, I don't get a blue screen, but I do get a boot into a black hole!!! I might try disabling the Soundblaster driver next to see if that effects it. It is too bad they didn't just leave it alone because it worked in 5600. Can't say I've experienced any black holes, but I have to agree with you on
leaving it alone. 5600 is the most stable and functional release for my setup, I can't believe that 5728 & 5744 are later versions and yet present more problems. It does not bode well seeing as RTM is so close.
