Default Update - not update

I tried to do an update of XP Home SP2 with RC1 - it worked at it for awhile
and upon reboot said it was unsuccessful and would restore older version of
windows, this was also unsuccessful. I booted to the RC1 DVD and did a clean
install, or so I thought. Upon booting into Vista build 5600, I found I had
files left over from the not-go-so-good update.

How do I delete $WINDOWS.~Q and windows.old? I have tried everything I know.
They are on C:\ drive.

All else went well, AVG Free works fine, and I am going to start installing
software as needed. RC1 seems to be pretty fast and smooth.
So far so good. I'll be happier when I can get rid of the two above
mentioned files.

The logon sound, which I was told was irremovable in 5536, appears to be the
same on 5600.
If I ever get my hands on the clown that spawned idea..........well never
mind.

BETA ON!

Put the DVD back in, reboot. Let setup run untill you get to upgrade or
custom install. Click on custom, then just below that to the right it says
advanced, click that then you should see format. click that it will format
and you will have a clean install without any windows.old folders taking up
space.

Sam,
Thanks for the idea, but I really don't want to install it again. I have
since installed some software and other things. I had this same situation
when I updated XP2 to the first Beta released, I think there is a way to
delete these 2 folders. BUT - if not - format it is<G>
