Default Unable to download files with IE

I've got a strange bug with IE. Whenever I try and download a file, it goes
through the motions of downloading as expected, but as soon as it finishes
the download window closes (the Close Window When Finished check box is not
ticked) and the file is not in the folder that I asked it to be downloaded
to.

Anyone else seen this, or suggest what might be wrong? The only thing I can
think of is that I tried to install AVG which failed, but seems to have left
AVG partially installed and broken. It won't uninstall from Add/Remove
programs (or whatever it's now called).

I've bugged it up to MS (think I've got it working now).

Best thing is to bug it, and go onto something like Firefox instead.
