Simple!

It works - I tried it.

Interesting and probably useful to some. However, I'm not loading my
browser down with more script and the Google Toolbar just to avoid
seeing something. My scroll wheel works very fast and since I'm not
reading the post, it's extra fast. The "head in the sand" approach is
not in my playbook.

Because right on the page you linked it says you need "Firefox browser
WITH google toolbar"

Well, it's not true, you don't need the dreadful Google Toolbar. I
actually haven't got Google Toolbar on my system, I don't like it,
which is why I was a bit surprised to see what you wrote.

I can't find that text anywhere on the page I linked to. I tried
searching the page for "google toolbar" and couldn't find any
occurrence of that pair of words. Could you tell me roughly where on
the page you saw it? It does say "You need to be using Firefox, and
Firefox needs to have GreaseMonkey installed." [GreaseMonkey is a
script manager for Firefox]. Maybe that's what you saw?

well,
here's a copy/paste from the page you linked...

Google Groups KillFile 1.4 Released »Google Groups KillFile Released
The Google Groups KillFile is a very simple, but useful script for
those folk that use Google Groups to access Usenet. In normal client
side newsreaders there is the concept of a killfile that allows you to
filter out posts based on subject or author which allows you to cut
through some of the noise. Unfortunately if you have to use a web based
client, namely Google Groups this feature is sadly missing which is
where the Google Groups KillFile GreaseMonkey script fits in. Once you
install the script it will add a small X next to each authors name. If
you click the X then you will no longer see any posts by that user. You
will need the following..

Firefox with Google Toolbar
GreaseMonkey 0.6.4
Latest Google Groups KillFile Script
If you are in the titles only view you will see an X next to the
user's name, clicking this places the author in the killfile. If you
are in the other view with Message Text view you will see a link that
says Ignore User, again clicking this places the user in the killfile.

At the top right there is a new menu option Kill File, that when
clicked displays the current killfile where you can remove people you
have previously placed on the list.

You should realise that if someone replies to the troll the message
will no longer be blocked as the authors name will change. So as always
don't feed the trolls

Hope this proves useful; the usual it's not my fault if it breaks
disclaimer applies.

Don't continue to be a dumbass Mike. Apparently you don't know how
these programs are written in addition to being blind to the items on
the site you posted.

Now I see something strange! If I view that page I linked to, using
Firefox, which is my normal browser, the top item out of that list of
three, is not visible, (that is, it is a blank line with a little >>
sign at the start) but when I view that same page in IE6, the line
"Firefox with Google Toolbar" shows up. So I owe you an apology.

However, just below it says

If you scroll down the page, you find

-----I've gone ahead and updated the script, works a lot better now,

The plain fact is, I do NOT have Google Toolbar on my system. Yet the
script works. The version of ggkillfile I downloaded does not need it
at all. My guess is that the original version needed Google Toolbar to
work, and the latest version doesn't, and the author either forgot to
update the web page to show that, or he did he did it in such a way
that only works in Firefox.

I'm not being a dumbass. The site works differently in Firefox and
IE6.

Anyway, no need to be rude. I haven't insulted you, so why the abuse,
huh?

OK I've worked out what's going on. I have a Firefox extension called
CustomizeGoogle which removes ads from Google pages, including Google
Groups.

The line on the web page which says you need "Firefox with Google
Toolbar" contains an ad, so CustomizeGoogle hid that line. Not seeing
it or knowing about it, I went ahead and added the script to my
Greasmonkey scripts. It works fine, and I am definitely not running the
"Firefox With Google Toolbar" version.

The plain fact is that the script works fine without Google Toolbar
installed. I don't know if the author is trying to trick people into
using Google Toolbar, or whether he genuinely thinks it is needed, but
it leaves a nasty taste in the mouth, doesn't it?

My apologies to all.
