Default USB to HP deskject 540

I have an older HP Deskjet 540 printer that works just fine and I don't
want to get rid of it, but my new laptop only has USB connections.
What model of USB adaptor cable will work to hook up my laptop to the
old Deskject? I know lots of people are probably grappling with this
issue as USB takes over and parallel devices fade out, but I don't want
to junk my printer yet just because of this issue. I don't do that
much printing and if an adaptor will work, I'd rather do that for the
interim. I've heard that some of these cables don't work or have
conflicts. I'm running Windows XP home edition. Thanks for any info!

There are USB to Parallel cable adapters available from Tiger Direct
and other retailers. I have used one occasionally and it has worked.

Good luck

thanks for the info - I'll probably go ahead and order a cable and hope
it works. But now I have another issue - it looks like I will need the
printer driver installed on my laptop for the printer. My printer used
an installation disc but the new laptop doesn't have a floppy drive.
Ugh...can I download a driver directly from the HP website for the
deskjet 540? If not, am I going to have to buy yet another "fix" for
this situation in the form of a floppy drive for my laptop so that it
can read my old diskettes? It seems the problems never end, when they
converted to USB, and also did away with floppy drives, an endless
series of situations cropped up like this...I'm probably not alone in
trying to keep my stuff up and running without junking perfectly good,
working equipment like printer, scanner, etc. . thanks for any help or
advice..........

If your running Windows XP, the printer drivers are included in the OS. You
just need to do the normal add printer install.

I had a DJ510 and was very disappointed by the XP drivers. The Error
Diffusion-Method for grayscale printing was gone, and worst, graphics seemed
to be downscaled to something like 150*150dpi with the printer in 300dpi
mode. Plain text was fine.
