Default HP DJ 1280

I currently have an HP DJ 1120C but it's decrepit and needs replacing. One
of the options I'm considering is the DJ 1280. Is this a localised (for
Australia) 1220 or an updated model? Does it suffer the same rear-feed
problems as the 1220?

When I bought my 1120C HP had the best black text on plain paper along with
Lexmark, lowest cpp, and reasonable photo quality. Do these assumptions
still hold true today?

Do HPs still suffer from horrible USB drivers or have HP fixed this?

Cant say much here for certain, but from HP user manuals it seems to me that
the 1280 has the same (useless) rear feed as the 1220. The rear feed
description in the user manual of Deskjet 9800 (1280's successor?) would
seem to indicate that this model has the same (or similarly working) rear
feed as the 1120.

HP Oz have listed the DJ 9800 as discontinued.

That bad, huh?

This I find odd, because from www.hp.com I get the impression that the 1280
is older than the 9800.

One problem only: it does not feed any photo papers except HP Everyday Photo
Paper. HP does not service that printer in my country (Finland), and does
not sell spare parts to third party shops that would.

Yes, I am looking for an A3 printer with excellent text and good photo
capability, that in real life handles paper the way the specs say it does.
It seems that the only way to go is to buy and try every A3 inkjet in the
market. The reviews and manufacturer specs are useless if you want to know
if the printer still works after a year or two of use.

HP Aus have discontinued the 9800 but kept the 1280. HP US have kept the
9800 and discontinued all 1200s. I've emailed HP Aus about this since the
9800 has better specs than any 1200, not to mention what we hope is a
functional rear feed. If I get a meaningful response I'll feed it back.

Have you considered Officejet Pro K850? Seems it has been around for some 2
years now, so there should be some user experience somewhere, but I can't
seem to be able to find much.

It's been about 6 weeks now and HP have not responded to either of my
queries, so my guess is they are embarrassed by the fact they're only
selling the dud in Australia.
