Dell 924 ink changing Q

Hi folks, Happy New Year to all!

My cousin just got a new Dell PC recently, and it came with a 924 printer
that she uses frequently. She said that she got a "warning" message that her
ink was running low and she would only be able to print x amount more pages.
I told her that it was very common to see that in our Canon & Epson
printers, and that you can continue to print for quite a while before having
to change cartridges. She's a little leery of my advice, so I'm wondering
out loud to any of you who actually have a Dell 924:

Do you get an official "You are out of ink, please click here to change
cartridge" kind of message??

My neighbor has a 924 that came with a Dell package deal. The carts
were starter carts with less than a full charge. They ran out fairly
quickly and the printer DEMANDED to be fed. She ordered a bunch of new
ones from Dell and the first one of the bunch that I installed was a
bad cart. The next one was OK. These are not real common cartridges
either.

I don't have specific info on the printer in question, but Dell branded
inkjet printers are made by Lexmark, and are basically rebranded
Lexmarks which require a slightly "Dellish" cartridge.

I figured it had to be made by *someone* (LOL, Dellish) because she got the
bundle. She's already sent for & received extra carts, but it's the onscreen
message (when to change) that I was curious about. For example, my Epson
will continue to let me print dozens of pages even though I get an alert
that I'm low. I have even run out of ink in the middle of printing a page,
was prompted to change carts, and printing resumed moments later without any
loss.

As it is almost certainly a Lexmark, which means that the
printhead would be in the cartridge. Ignore the warnings and
keep printing until the quality drops off, then fit the new
one.
The starter cartridge is not full and the new one is not
much better, they only have about 3ml of each ink color in
them.

I have a lexmark and the starter cartridge I think was set
to print about 60 pages. Using the normal calculations of 5%
cover that would mean a total of 3 A4's at full colour.
