Microsoft update automatically installed the lastest definition update,
1.14.1948.9 for windows Defender (KB915597) both my machines running defender report the following error on startup. "Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender service to stop." No other software has been installed, uninstalled or the setting adjusted on either machine. Pleaswe help. |

Solved my own problem.
Looking at the Microsoft Defender site I noticed the expiry date on Beta2 was today. Downloaded and installed the final release and Defender now works on both machines. Thought I had already downloaded the final version, but obviously not. A pop up message saying that the software had expired and that I need to download the latest version would have been nice, rather than a cryptic error message. I get the same thing on my computer. I'm glad I'm not alone.

You probably have the Beta2 (Microsoft user test) version installed
I solved my own problem by downloading and installing the final release, once I released it was probably due to the expiry of the beta version. Defender now works fine. Download from here http://www.microsoft.com/athome/sec...re/default.mspx |

Having been similarly afflicted by the extremely irritating error message
from Microsoft Defender, I am very grateful to you for pointing me in the right direction to resolve the problem. The support email I received from Microsoft was little help in itself; however, it did allow me to find your message. Why they couldn't have told me that Defender had expired on 31st December and advise me that installing the latest version would rectify the problem, is beyond me. I am purely self-taught on a computer and it has been really hard work for me to resolve this on my own. Many thanks for your help.
