Default Defender install error

When I click on WindowsDefender.msi, which I downloaded to my desktop, I
consistently receive this error message: "Windows Installer
This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

I do not have a previous version installed.

Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

Default RE: Defender install error

Have you tried this suggestion posted by Bill Sanderson some time back in the
Installation NG?

"Go to WindowsUpdate and do an express scan and install everything offered.
Repeat, until nothing more is offered.

If you are on Windows 2000, do a custom scan, and install the "root
certificates" update.

That should be everything needed to both install the program and receive
updates."
