This post is different from my previous one.
The other post refers to removing the Java .msi file from the Latest install. That question is still open and valid, could someone let me know. This post involves something else. While waiting for a reply to the first post I decided to continue searching for more information. What I discovered was that not only did installing 1.5.xx NOT uninstall 1.4.xx but uninstalling 1.4.xx did not remove the the 1.4.xx .msi installation file"S". Yes I said FILES (PLURAL). Even though I had deleted the 1.4.xx from : C:\Documents and Settings\tim\Local Settings\Application Data\{7148F0A6-6813-11D6-A77B-00B0D0142030} I have found OTHER COPIES of the Same File in: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\{7148F0A6-6813-11D6-A77B-00B0D0142030} C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Local Settings\Application Data\{7148F0A6-6813-11D6-A77B-00B0D0142030} C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Application Data\{7148F0A6-6813-11D6-A77B-00B0D0142030} C:\Documents and Settings\Guest\Local Settings\Application Data\{7148F0A6-6813-11D6-A77B-00B0D0142030} ALSO: C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Application Data\{7148F0A6-6813-11D6-A77B-00B0D0142030} and C:\i386 Each file is 9,713KB FOR A WHOPPING 57MB of wasted space. (that's not counting the one I deleted from MY profile which would make it about 67MB) The C:\i386 file I understand. The i386 directory is a copy of your original Windows installation of Windows XP. I'm not sure it is safe to mess with That directory but I am going to delete ALL the other copies of 1.4.xx ..msiS This BUG may not apply to versions beyond 1.4.2_03.msi (the one that comes with Windows XP) but has been known since October of 2002 and was still being discussed in May of 2006!! see: http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/vie...?bug_id=4760174 -------- Problem Description : un-installing the J2SDK/JRE should leave the machine in a clean state Tested_Java_Release : JI PIT 03 for 1.4.2 (mantis) Tested_Build : J2SDK.exe Tested_Build_Location : /net/sqesvr/deployment3/mantis/JPI-PIT-05/bundles/ Test_Location : JPI Control Panel Tested_Machine_Name : lemonade 1 / dnm-101 Testted O/S : Windows 98 / 2000 / NT / XP Tested_ Browsers : IE / NS .... Result : files/folders, logs etc., created during jre installation and while running an applet in the browser are not being deleted from the target machine when the last instance of JRE/JDK is being un-installed. At this point I am VERY disappointed in SUN. By this time this BUG should be CLEARLY pointed out to Everyone that might have the affected versions so they can at least clean up this Crap after an uninstall. Still want to know what I can do about the Current 1.5.xx .msi but since I'm about to get back about 50MBs of space I guess I can wait a while. ?:-( Tim Geek w/o Portfolio and a very Bad opinion of Sun Java at the moment. |

Hi Tim:
I use XP Pro SP2, had a similar case, and this is what I did. I installed Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 from the following site, it is the 4th from top for me with XP Pro: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Verified the Installation of 1.6 at: http://www.java.com/en/ Next I went to the Control Panel and check that I had the blue Java icon and the new white. In Add or Remove Programs I removed Java 1.5, leaving only Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 with a file size of 88.66 MB. Went back to the CP and had only the white Java icon 1.6. Click it and access Java Control Panel > Java tab > and checked that both View showed only Platform 1.6.0 as installed. In the Program Files, inside the Java folder, I had manually deleted copies of old 1.4. There were 2 files now, one named jre 1.5.0_09 of 1.12 Mb and the other jre 1.6.0 of 68.6 MB. Perfect, no excess weight, only of 1.12 MB. The Application Datamany numbers files, I had taken care long before that. I created a folder named Many Crazy Numbers and filed all of them inside and sent to my external HD. Somtime after I deleted them. Hope this will help, Efrain "Tim Clark" wrote: > This post is different from my previous one. > The other post refers to removing the Java .msi file from the Latest install. > That question is still open and valid, could someone let me know. > > This post involves something else. > While waiting for a reply to the first post I decided to continue searching > for more information. > > What I discovered was that not only did installing 1.5.xx NOT uninstall > 1.4.xx but uninstalling 1.4.xx did not remove the the 1.4.xx .msi > installation file"S".
