Default Defender scheduled scan issues

While the Scheduled tasks show it runs every night around 2:00am, Defender
doesn't think it ever ran. One of the things I have found in troubleshooting
is the scheduled scan only takes 1 minute. Is this normal? A scan kicked off
from the app itself takes longer.

I have removed, ripped the registry, and reinstalled this app many times,
but can't get it convinced it is running the scheduled scan. My home PCs
have no problem running the scheduled scan and knowing it ran.

Hello Mike,

Sorry to read you still have that problem, please try this:

You can repair Windows Defender.
First exit WD, Open WD main page, click the down arrow to the right of the
white question mark in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender;
using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Click WD and click Change. Click Next, and then click Updªte.

Reboot

If you still have the same message, try this:

First exit WD, Open WD main page, click the down arrow to the right of the
white question mark in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender;
using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Click WD and click Support Information and click Repair.

Reboot.

Let us know how it works ºut

Hi Mike,

> Is one minute for a quick scan normal??

With the new version and engine, is possible.

This MSkb explains chkdsk and I believe if you use switches it will repair
your faults.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265/en-us

chkdsk volume:/f

or

chkdsk volume:/r

Try the /f switch first.

What does running chkdsk have to do with Defender not being smart enough to
realize it ran the scan IT created the schedule to run??

Have done an uninstall and reinstall many times. Did a repair install also -
still no help, Defender still thinks the last time it ran a scan (notice, I
didn't say Scheduled Scan, because it was a manual scan (to shut up the
complaint that a scan hadn't been run in 3 days!) it seems it only
recognizes a scan if it is manually kicked off - not scheduled) was on
12/18, and the scheduled tasks AND the log both show a scheduled scan ran
1:37AM on 12/21!!!

Hi Mike

Search this forum group for "WD won't scan automatically" and follow the
instructions in that thread to set up a windows scheduled task (as the WD
scheduled one is known bug). Don't forget to unhide the windows task etc
as per instructions and set your "run as" password.

Cheers
Jangles
