Defender

I don't keep Defender running on my computer, fire it up once a week or so
and today it offered a new download. My computer began running so slowly I
thought there was something wrong with it, I'm on a new system, XP on an AMD
4200+ with 2 gig RAM. I finally removed Defender from my computer and presto
no problems. I have norton protection on here, maybe it was fighting with
that. I'm sorry to see it go it was a nice program but the performance level
I was getting from my system was unbelievably bad. I thought I'd put the
word out there.

I'm not sure what you mean by "I don't keep Defender running on my computer".
Windows Defender runs as a system Service and should be active all the time
(unless you are disabling the Service or the registry Run key). It sounds
like after the WD signatures were updated, WD started a system scan. I don't
know your WD options, but a quickscan typically should last a few minutes;
however, a full scan could take considerable time and system performance
could be significantly degraded. I would look into that possibility. Also,
I don't know if you are only using Norton anti-virus or NIS. NIS performs
real-time anti-spyware checking and the use of WD real-time protection might
be considered redundant. Assuming you have NIS installed, my personal
opinion (since you spent the money on NIS) would be to use Windows Defender
as a second opinion. In other words, turn off WD real-time protection and if
desired perform automatic quick scans and occasionally perform full scans.

I am one and the same. It is a pleasure to participate in the WD newsgroup.
I have always liked Yahoo Messenger, but I was dismayed by the poor level of
support for the toolbar. Yahoo in many respects started acting like AOL. I
have vowed many times to give up on the Yahoo Toolbar forum. However, I try
to maintain my sanity and continue to support the Yahoo forum.

Have you seen/used/installed the Yahoo Companion/Toolbar on IE7?
My work has blocked the automatic download/install of IE7 and I refuse to
put it on my home machine till I see how they interact together (in addtition
to other problems I have heard about)

There is no problem for home use Tim. Under the Yahoo forum, you are dealing
with people who have corrupted registries, bad IE 7 installs and God knows
what else. I would not suggest installing Yahoo's customized version of IE7.
Just to play safe, I typically uninstall all Yahoo software first and the
folders under Program Files and then run Ccleaner Issues until no problems
found. I would then install the vanilla Microsoft IE7 and do a functional
test. Next I re-install all the Yahoo Stuff. If you are installing Yahoo
Messenger, the installer will attempt to install the toolbar (without telling
you!) unless you specify custom install (just be aware). I usually install
the toolbar separately from toolbar.yahoo.com. That way I always have the
latest version. I have had zero problems or crashes with the toolbar and
IE7. Also, when you install the toolbar you can install Norton Spyware
Scanner (not NIS). After you install the toolbar, make sure you close IE and
re-open. Then click the Norton toolbar Icon. I am a little disturbed by the
infrequency of definition updates for the Norton spyware scanner. Obviously
if you have any problems you can always get in touch with me, but be sure to
give me inadequate information and zero feedback so it will be just like the
Yahoo Toolbar Forum.

Thanks for the Info,
Does it have to occupy its own line on the Main IE7 Bar(s) or can it be
merged with another one the way I can on IE6.
Currently i have:
Top Line: [Navigator bottons][File,Edit,View,Tools,...][Address bar][Go
button]
Next Line: [Links (3 showing)][Yahoo Toolbar]

I hear the New IE7 is not very configurable. I don't use tabs so I'm not
worried about that.

By the way, my concerns about IE7 have nothing to do with anything I've read
in the Y! Group. Most of those kids do nothing but wine(sp).

I agree about the NSS, it needs to update. BUT, the one time it did update
it was HUGE. I had to update at work and copy the .idx file to a flash drive
to take it home.
They appear to not know how to do an incremental/delta update.

For all practical purposes the Yahoo toolbar will occupy one line. You could
possiibly merge it with another toolbar, but I wouldn't recommend doing that.
The IE6 menu bar is hidden by default. For security reasons the address bar
can not be hidden and will occupy a line with the IE7 search engine window.
The favorites, tabs, and customizable icons will occupy a separate line. So
you should wind up with three lines (and of course the title line and status
line make 5 lines). At first glance, IE7 doesn't appear to be that
customizable. I have found that I can compress whatever I had in IE6 into
the same amount of real estate under IE7.
