In Windows 98, I had a desktop icon on my toolbar next to Start. If I wanted
back to desktop I simply clicked the icon and all pages minimized to the
toolbar and the Desktop was immediatly presented. The system was setup this
way when I started using it and I have not been able to find anything to
create a shortcut from. Is such possible in XP. Also, since the pull bar next
to Start in my XP won't move can a shortcut be placed next to Start? All
ideas, suggestions, and comments will be greatly appreciated.

You can use the Windows Key + D keyboard shortcut to show the desktop

To move the quick launch bar ("pull bar"), right-click the blue taskbar
area, and click "Lock the taskbar" to remove the checkbox.

A handle bar should now appear beside the quick launch and you can click and
drag it or the icons around.

To increase the size of Quick Launch [Next to Start Button, so you can put
icons in it], first you need to unclock the Taskbar. Right-click on an empty
area of the Taskbar and uncheck "Lock the Taskbar" option. Now, you can
notice handler on both side of Quick Launch icons. From the right-side
handler increase the size of quick lunch.

The icon is called "Show Desktop". Copy and paste the following matter in
Notepad:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=EXPLORER.EXE,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

You need to consider one thing file saving the file. In save dialog box,
under "Save as type" choose "All Files" and give the file name like
ShowDesktop.scf

Don't forget to type the extension. Now, you can save this file on Desktop
then later drop it on Quick Launch.

Enable Quick Launch Toolbar :
Right click taskbar ,
Toolbars,
Make sure Quick Launch is ticked.


To enable resizing of toolbars :
Right click taskbar,
Untick "Lock the taskbar"


You can also use these keyboard shortcut:
Windows Key + D |Show Desktop. To restore windows, press the shortcut again.
WIndows Key + M | Minimize Windows (not dialog boxes). To restore windows,
Winkey+Shift+M

1. Open Notepad,
2. Copy/Paste following lines in it :

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

3. Click File, Save as..
4. Copy/Paste the following line in File name box :
%appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\Show Desktop.scf
5. Click OK

Nothing at all, except that it's two clicks instead of one. Some people
prefer the single click.

There's also nothing wrong with holding down the Windows key and pressing D
or M.

Each to his own. There's more than one way to skin the cat, and we don't all
have to have the same preferred way to do something.

But once you have clicked on the blank space and then clicked on "Show
Desktop," the "Show Desktop" appears as an icon in your Quick Launch, and
then can be done with one click.

My 2 cents. the Windows key + D is the fastest as one doesn't have to reach
for the mouse and move the pointer.

responding to my post. I prefer point and click, my daughter thinks it too
